Mini – football for players up to ages 10/11

Mini – football has revolutionised the way that younger kids play the game. It is likely to be their first experience of playing in a team and it is great fun as all the players are fully involved in the action. It can be summarised as follows;

This is a scaled down version of the game with smaller pitches and goals. Typically a pitch size is 35 yards x 55 yards for under 9s and 10s and 25 yards x 35 yards for under 8s. Goals are 12' wide x 6' high.

Games are played with 7 players per side with substitutes who can be rolled on and off. This means a player who has been substituted can go back on.

Match duration is typically 15 minutes each way for the youngest players going up to 20/25 minutes for the older players in this age group. It is recommended that in one day children under 8 should not play more that 40 minutes. Under 9s and under 10s should not play more than 60 minutes.

A smaller ball is used – this will normally be size 3.

Mini-football is played in organised local leagues or at school. The Burton Junior Football League (www.bjfl.uk.net/) is a very good example of the scope of mini-football and how well organised it can be.

In this particular age range girls and boys can play in the same team together.
